The Scenic Route (Part 2)
So, after seven years I got out of the horse business. Got myself a real job. Worked my way up the ladder as far as I could go, left that company and got another real job. Stayed there for nine years working my way up the ladder once again.
I kept a toe in the horse world, still rode when I could, volunteered with several different organizations in my spare time.
My career was going OK but something was definitely missing. Something just wasn’t right. I had the consistent paycheck but my life was no longer my own. I just wasn’t happy.
Thankfully, in 2018 I was fired. Nothing personal, just some restructuring. I got a decent severance and had a lot of vacation time saved up so I was OK. I upped my volunteering game and started spending more and more time around my old barn buddies. Gradually word got around that I was available and that I was a pretty handy person to have around a barn. My phone started ringing.
By the time my severance and vacation time had run out I had a pretty decent lineup of gig work. Interestingly enough, a lot of the skills that I had developed while working in offices came in really, really handy. Apparently, there’s a need around barns for someone who knows their way around a computer.
So yeah, I’m here where I wanted to be all along. Just took a pretty scenic route to get here.
