I got out of horses for many years. My family still had horses so I was around them but no riding. And my last horse was just not an enjoyable ride. He was a sweetie but he was not trained right when he was young so when I got him at 17 he had so many bad habits to work through.
My husband and I were recently at a livestock sale and this old sorrel ran through. Ranch branded on his hip. A man working at the stockyards jumped on him with a ratty old saddle and a halter. I wasn’t looking to buy, but here was just something about him.
I paid $750 and brought him home. After we had the vet out to check him over we discovered he was close to 30. I didn’t have a single saddle that would fit him but I said screw it, and jumped on with my bareback pad and a halter. This is so not like me, even when I rode regularly.
His ears pricked up, he stepped right out when I asked and you could literally feel him relax. Like that’s all he wanted was to be ridden, taken out for a walk, to have a purpose. And he is the most well minded, most caring horse.
I still haven’t found a good saddle for him, but out barebacking this fall in a hack, the neighbors started shooting and he stopped, looked at the sound and walked on. No cares. He’s just content, and so am I. He truly brought back my love for horses.
