Resolutions
Happy New Year! Here is a collection of New Year’s Resolutions submitted by your fellow Barnrats.
“I want to be more confident riding around the property. He’s big, spooky and snorts and blows uncontrollably at any and every object and I cannot get over the fear that he’ll dump me at any given second. “

“To show intro C on our local dressage circuit and ride 100 miles on the trails.”

“I’m giving my 5 year old the Winter off to grow (he is massive and awkward). We’re doing in-hand work and he’ll be brought back into work in the Spring. My resolution is to keep focused on his progression as it matches his physical maturity and mental needs – rather than giving in to the peer pressure of getting my fancy import into the show ring. Also, for in-hand work, recognizing that sometimes the goal/achievement is just getting time together.”

“Starting “this month I’m half leasing a quarter horse! I’m getting back into horses after 6 years away for school. I tried a couple of horses out on the trails and found a reliable guy to take out in the local trail system 2-3 days a week. I felt my mind and body becoming unwell in the last year, so I am so eager for the boost to my mental and physical health. It’s not a resolution as much as a change to my lifestyle for 2024 and I’m so excited!”

“I’m just a riding baby but I’d like to make it another year without falling off! I’m at a year and a half since I started and I haven’t had my first fall yet.”

“Be a more confident rider. I spent the first 17 years of my life riding and was quite competitive. Then took a 5 year break and I’ve never felt like I could ride quite like I used too. I feel like I’ve hit a rut, grown complacent and scared to make mistakes with the youngster I have now.”

“I got a off the track quarter horse in October. My goals are to take him on trail rides and solid on the barrels by the end of the year. I plan on doing this by keeping on my riding schedule, riding with intent and pushing myself to go places (trail riding and low key barrel races).”

“To give my horses more. I already do try to give them the best life possible with plenty of turnout, moved them so they could have bigger stables, bought my mare so my gelding wouldn’t ever be lonely, took away the bit, etc. but I think more little things to make their lives more enjoyable for them would be far from a wasted effort, teaching them to pony and backing my mare so we can go hacking out more so they can see more of the world, bringing more fruits and veggies for them when I go up, more stable toys, see if there’s any way I can make their pastures better, trailer them to some of the woodlands and beaches I used to take my leases to, etc.”

“My goal is to try a little harder. Sometimes I let myself get away with not.. giving 100% of my effort to do better, because I tell myself, ‘this is a long term process, if I don’t have a fantastic posting trot today that’s ok because I’ll get it eventually!!’ The problem is, I seem to continually not reeeeally make progress because I’m letting myself get away with it!”
~TL
“As someone new, my focus going into this year will be on my posture and balance. I want to make my lower leg more solid and feel like I am very comfortable with the rising trot as well as at least having an understanding of canter and sitting trot.”
